An Artist for President: The Nation is the Artwork, We are the Artists
A Book By Susanna B. Dakin Chronicling Her Campaign For President Of The United States
“To my way of thinking the arts nourish and harbor our nation’s most precious rights, liberties, and values.” —Susanna Dakin
about the book
It was 1984. Ronald Reagan was running for his second term. His administration was pursuing what would become a relentless, multi-decades long retreat from democratic ideals. Susanna Dakin had an outrageous notion that artist-citizens could reverse that oh-so-subtle nullification of government by and for the people: Susanna Dakin, sculptor, performance artist, and publisher declared with the Federal Elections Commission as an Artist/ Candidate for president! Publication date: November 1, 2011
Against the inclination of her own nature as well as advice from friends, family, and scoffers, Dakin launched a Presidential campaign as “An Artist”, traveling the country mostly by train, meeting with political groups, art students and artists, and random folks she encountered along the way, in Portland and Seattle, Denver and Boulder, Galesburg and Chicago, Cleveland and Shaker Heights, New York City, Washington DC, Atlanta, Houston, and at least 200 whistle stops in between. Assisted by her “campaign consultant”—performance and media artist Lowell Darling, who had been tested in the political arena during his 1978 run for Governor of California—Dakin appeared on television, radio, and in newspapers nationwide, sometimes receiving a surprisingly serious hearing from the public and the media.
In this compelling, thoughtful, and highly entertaining true story, we follow Dakin from the moment she launches her campaign—emerging from the surf on Venice Beach for a “performance/press conference” facing a slew of reporters and TV cameras. Toggling between Dakin’s narrative and excerpts from Darling’s campaign journal, this “biography of an event” records the protagonists’ battles with the loony ideas people hold about women, artists, “Beltway” outsiders and about each other!
As the fine line between politics and performance art becomes ever more blurred, we see first-hand how positive change can grow from direct confrontation with political prejudice. This inspiring book continues to push the boundaries of civil, social, and personal re-creation.
